The high-voltage cable system from NKT is now ready to transmit renewable energy from the Rentel offshore wind farm to the Belgian power grid. When in operation the offshore wind farm will provide green energy to 300,000 households supporting the national target of 13 % of the power consumption to be covered by renewable energy by 2020. For NKT the turnkey project has been successfully executed after great collaboration with Rentel NV.
We are happy to support the transition to renewable energy in Belgium by leveraging our extensive experience and expertise in turnkey solutions for offshore wind. When having the total responsibility and by working closely with our customer and suppliers, we can ensure higher efficiency and lower risks in the project interfaces. It has been a pleasure working with Rentel and the teams on both sides have done an amazing job driving the project to success, says Andreas Berthou, Executive Vice President and Head of HV Solutions at NKT.
NKT has designed, manufactured and installed the 40-kilometer extruded three-core 220 kV XLPE HVAC (alternating current) submarine cable system according to the project plan. The installation was finalized in 2018 after a successful offshore operation completed by the advanced cable-laying vessel NKT Victoria.
NKT has an extensive track record of delivering turnkey high-voltage cable system solutions for both AC and DC for offshore wind applications. The Rentel project is an example of the benefits of turnkey solutions allowing customers to have one partner throughout the lifetime of a cable system to increase project flexibility and lower execution risks and costs.
