Cooler product development, ABB Germany

Technology Consulting supported the concept development and prototype manufacturing for a new product launch. BioClean Robot development, ABB Robotics

Scope: The BioClean project aimed to develop and qualify a robot designed for cleanroom applications, meeting the stringent requirements of the medical industry. Technology Consulting assisted ABB with material-related challenges throughout the project. To verify and secure the durability of the painted robot to the wipe-down procedure used for cleaning in the pharmaceutical application, we developed an accelerated compatibility test procedure and wipe-down test. These tests evaluate the compatibility of the materials used in ABB’s robots with the detergents used in the pharmaceutical sector.

Quality control of motor electrical steel Customer, ABB Motors, Finland

Scope: To ascertain high quality and performance of electrical steel used in motors and machines, Technology Consulting, in close collaboration with our customer ABB Motors, Finland, developed an analysis package to evaluate and verify all key parameters related to motor performance.

The analyses included in this package are:

Magnetic properties of electrical steel by using an Epstein frame according to standard IEC 60404-2
Surface insulation resistance per lamination, by using a conventional Franklin tester as specified in standard IEC 60404-11
Tensile testing according to ISO 6892-1
Hardness and thickness of electrical steel strips
Thermal conductivity at room temperature, 100°C and 200°C
Chemical composition of electrical steel. In particular, the content of C, Si and Al

Airplus^™, the eco-efficient alternative to SF6 Customer, ABB Medium-Voltage

Scope: ABB Medium-Voltage began developing an alternative gas to replace SF₆ as insulating media in electrical equipment due to SF₆’s high global warming potential – which is 23,500 times greater than that of CO₂.

A key aspect of this development was ensuring the long-term stability of the gas mixture and understanding how the gas and its degradation products affect the materials inside the switchgear.

Technology Consulting developed a unique and reliable method for analysing Airplus^™ and its degradation products. This method has been essential for ongoing material compatibility screening.

All materials were tested following a defined aging test protocol, and the results were collected in a comprehensive material database. This database is now used to predict the compatibility and stability of new candidate materials and to aid in the development of new type Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) products.

Since the development stage, the gas analysis and material compatibility screening tests have been applied to related projects. The database is live and growing, serving as a powerful tool for material selection. It is not only used for GIS but also applicable to various types of product development, ensuring that the most optimal materials, from a function and cost perspective, are always used.
